Design Research, considered significantly ahead of its time and incredibly influential on the landscape of retail, was founded in 1953 by Ben Thompson in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Thompson set out to create a space where, “people could buy everything they needed for contemporary living” and filled his stores with furnishings from designers such as Alvar Aalto, Marcel Breuer, and Joe Colombo. Design Research, from Chronicle Books, documents the history of the now defunct retailer and highlights the wide array of design objects and furniture the store helped introduce into American homes.
